What is the dermal structure?

The dermis is composed of cells, the fibroblasts, which form what is called the extra-cellular matrix or ECM.

The ECM also comprises fibres (collagen and elastin) and glycosaminoglycans (including hyaluronic acid).

With age, dermal cells divide more slowly and synthesise these fibres less effectively. At the same time, there is an increase in the production of enzymes, such as elastase and collagenase, which contributes to the deterioration and collapse of the dermal structure.
